A few Weird and Wonderful hotels in the Western Cape of South Africa

The Grand Daddy is the perfect base from which to explore Cape Town and the area’s endless touring options and Cape Town’s beaches.  Located in famous Long Street, the hotel is close to Green Market Square, as well as award-winning restaurants, theatres, nightclubs, bars, shopping centres, championship golf courses and other sporting facilities.  The Airstream Penthouse Park is perched on top of the hotel, and is one of the most talked about, hip and happening places in South Africa.  More trailer flash than trailer trash, seven imported vintage Airstream Trailers were handed over to local artists and designers for an imaginative makeover.  The result is a collection of rooftop suites that plays with the imagination and the senses.

Your Airstream is enclosed by a tidy garden complete with US Postal Service mailboxes.  All the Airstreams are air-conditioned, incredibly well-insulated, have hot and cold running water, flushing toilets and showers.  For those who want to pimp their park life and flash their trailer trash – or for those who simply want to experience the world’s only trailer park penthouse suite – just take the vintage elevator to the third floor, take the rooftop exit and enter the adventure.  Firmly entrenched in the garden of The Grand Daddy’s rooftop, they are an offbeat alternative to conventional hotel accommodation.

Old Mac Daddy is the fourth accommodation establishment in the Daddy Group’s stable.  Always in pursuit of the humorous, the unusual, the inspiring and the easy-going, the Old Mac Daddy Trailer Hotel is the rural extension of the good life that Daddy provides in the city, but also signals a return to real leisure time – for the sake of it.  The beautiful setting of the Old Mac Daddy Luxury Trailer Hotel is on a piece of land owned by the Vuki Trust.  The name Vuki is a Sesotho word meaning, to stand up.  The use of the word in Sotho however implies “Arise, be awake.  Go and do something for yourself”, and with reason… The Vuki Trust is an historic and highly successful BEE ownership project that was formed between local workers in the area during a period in which a farm was under their administration.  The workers rallied together and obtained the financing to buy the farm, finally in 2005.  Today Vuki Farms is a Fair Trade Accredited agricultural concern that is also a successful producer apples, pears and grapes.

Part wholesome caravan park, part designer farm lodge, Old Mac Daddy Trailer Hotel is a new chapter in adventure, escapism and pure relaxation.  Set on the pine-whispering slopes of a beautiful corner of the Elgin Valley, Old Mac Daddy is a collection of vintage Airstream Trailer Suites, each designed by an artist, designer or creative living and working in Cape Town.

Fully catered and serviced; Old Mac Daddy offers trailer units with artist-themed bedrooms and uber-contemporary living spaces.  The Barn (communal area) is a slick but comfortable Scandi-meets-SA space to take in the views, enjoy some good food and dip into the Grolsch bar (Grolsch on tap).  The pool and deck is a sure winner on summer days – if you aren’t at the dam – and roaring fireplaces and a library keep it cosy in winter.  Orchards, vineyards, frog-song ponds and dusty mountain-bike roads abound.  Set in the uncluttered surrounds of The Barn, Old Mac Daddy’s resident restaurant is where you will be enjoying plenty of wholesome and delicious food during your stay.

The Phantom Forest Eco Reserve, on the southern Cape coast of South Africa, in the heart of the magnificent Garden Route… whispers a very special magic.  Elevated tree-suites at Phantom Forest are an African celebration of natural textures, hand-crafted furnishings, ethnic artefacts and hand weaving, stunning end-glass gable, en-suite forest bathroom, and deck with trees popping through here and there.  In synergy with Phantom’s theme of touch and taste Africa……from the sensuous touch of silk and velvet to the visual beauty of mosaic and handcrafted lamps… from double glass showers and twin mosaic basins to double-ended baths…the Moroccan inspired tree suites add a new dimension to accommodation in South Africa.  Get in touch with your spirit at the Body Boma where the therapists will pamper you from head to toe.

Perhaps you may decide to take a picnic paddling up the river…or maybe a soak in the Bubble Barrel or maybe a cocktail or two at the Eyrie watching the sun set over the lagoon or maybe a lazy read by one of the pools…  Privately owned, within 137 hectares of nature reserve on the Knysna River, the Phantom Forest offers a unique bio-diversity of Afromontane forest, Cape coastal fynbos and estuarine wetland.

There are over 150 bird species, bush pig, bushbuck, grysbok, the rare blue duiker (one of Africa’s smallest antelope), and a variety of smaller game.  Cuisine at Phantom Forest is Pan-African with local colour, served at night in the thatched “Boma” where a Bushbuck may just drop in for a drink!  Sundowners at the “Eyrie” at Phantom Forest are spectacular, with sunsets and views to match – right to the famous Knysna Heads – a view shared only with the resident Fish Eagles.
