Klein Karoo Klassique

Make sure you visit the town of Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo from the 4th to the 7th August 2011 for a festival of superb classical music, delicious Klein Karoo cuisine, wine and art.  The Klein Karoo Klassique is an annual event where local artists and galleries from the Klein Karoo and surrounds will be exhibiting their art to show case what is available in the area.  Other visual artists such as Thijs Nel and Francois Gerber exhibit their crafts in various venues and there will also be practical painting workshops.

This is an event you should put in your diary now as it is worth traveling the distance to enjoy and relax in this charming and historic Klein Karoo town where you can enjoy top quality regional food and wine while enjoying the classical sounds of a string quartet, a piano duo (piano & cello) two piano recitals, a performance of Lieder, a wind instrument quintet, an organ recital and the performance of an a capella choir.  Klein Karoo potters, painters and visual artists will exhibit in lovely venues and will be well worth a look.

The highlight of the week end will be a performance by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra in the Civic Centre, with duets and arias by the well-known Pretty Yende and Given Nkosi.  The Orchestra will also perform well-loved opera arias with soloists Friedel Mitas and Conroy Scott.  The conductor is Brandon Phillips, winner of the first Len van Zyl Conductor’s Competition.  Friedel Mitas, who grew up in Oudtshoorn, completed her Performance Diploma in Opera at the University of Cape Town under Prof Virginia Davids and last year won the Olitalia/Rialto Bursary Competition.  She has performed as soloist for numerous oratorio works and sung various leading roles.  Conroy Scott has sung amongst others the lead baritone role in Puccini’s La Rondine and the title role in Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni.

The Klein Karoo Klassique promises to be an exceptional week end for followers of classical music, good wines, high quality art and scrumptious food.
