Daisies and Klipkoppe

Spring is on its way and that means the Flower Season’s almost here 🙂  Here being the Western Cape of South Africa 😉  Road Travel can still offer excellent value for money accommodation in the most superb areas along the spectacular flower route.  The ideal route will take you from Cape Town up the West Coast into Namaqualand.

If you’re into space, and vast quantities of it, the Northern Cape is for you.  Endless flat vistas stretch out across the silent, thirsty landscapes.  It was in the heart of this province, at Verneukpan, that Malcolm Campbell attempted to break the Land Speed Record in 1929 in his car, Bluebird.  He failed, but he succeeded in putting this strikingly desolate part of the world on the map.  Springbok is world renowned as the Namaqualand Flower Capital.  The town lies in a narrow valley between the high granite domes of the Klein Koperberge which are locally referred to as “klipkoppe”.  Originally known as Springbokfontein, after the many antelope that inhabited the region, the name was shorted to Springbok.
