Hout Bay lies just 20 minutes’ scenic drive from the centre of Cape Town yet has a unique and timeless beauty that makes it so popular with us locals and visitors alike. Hout Bay (Afrikaans: Houtbaai, from the Dutch for “Wood Bay”) is the name of a coastal suburb of Cape Town, with a mix of neighbourhoods from the very rich to the very poor. Hout Bay is often called the Heart of the Cape, being situated almost halfway between Cape Town and Cape Point. The views in this sociable village are mesmerizing as Hout Bay is set in a fold of sea-lapped mountains that look out across the Atlantic Ocean. The town is presided over by the Sentinel – guardian of Hout Bay’s treasures.
The protective mountains surround Hout Bay and the long sandy beach is ideal for swimming and water sports like sea kayaking, sailing, fishing and surfing. The main street in Hout Bay is full of interesting shops and there is an excellent craft market on the green every Sunday. People sit chatting in local cafes as they sample the cuisine in the many restaurants and there is a meandering feel to Hout Bay. There is also a vibrant township called Imizamo Yethu. The harbor is a worthwhile visit, as there are spectacular views of the bay and boat rides to Duiker Island and around the Sentinel. Chapman’s Peak Drive is one of the world’s most scenic mountain drives and has recently undergone renovations to ensure the safety of travelers using the route. The East and West forts built by the Dutch in the 18th century can also be visited, with the original cannons and barracks still standing on the slopes of Chapman’s Peak. The East fort is the oldest operating gun battery in the world. The mountains surrounding Hout Bay also make for good hiking trails. In the same area is the bronze statue of a leopard looking out over the ocean.
